Asthma
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic yet common lung disease that affects people of all ages, but most often it starts during childhood. It affects the small air passages (bronchi) of the lungs. These airways become swollen and inflamed which causes them to narrow. This leads to the production of mucus (fluid and reduces the flow of air in and out of the lungs. It causes recurring episodes of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and chronic coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.
Most, but not all sufferers also suffer from allergies.
In the United States, there are more than 22 million people sufferers. Nearly 6 million of these are children.
Asthmatic people have a treatable health condition. No cure has been developed. With medical supervision & good personal management anyone with Asthma can enjoy active normal lives.
